I struggle with feelings of #bitterness often. But after many years, I’ve trained myself to at least consider what I’m #grateful for before feeling sorry for myself and getting angry. There’s always going to be something wrong, especially when I am looking for it. But if I intentionally practice #gratitude, I am harnessing a different kind of energy. “Without constraints, we cannot appreciate freedom. Without struggle, we cannot appreciate ease.” Yes, I’m smiling, but it’s a complicated smile, as most smiles are. I expended so much of myself as a #caregiver to my dad, but I found so much meaning in return. I invested so much time and emotion into writing this book, but I found fulfillment in telling my story. None of us like when we are forced to be strong. But as we look back, we know we are better because of the experiences that tested us when we didn’t want to be tested. That was becoming a caregiver. And when we have the privilege of choosing when to be strong—of putting forth effort on our own terms—we need to recognize that opportunity as something special.
